Every family has its own festival rhythm.
In ours, Deepavali always announced itself a few days early.
Someone disappeared into the kitchen.
Oil began heating.
The Murukku press came out.
Fresh golden spirals cooled on steel plates before finding their way into large stainless-steel snack tins
waiting patiently in the pantry.
Those tins were never full for very long.
Nobody actually waited for Deepavali.
Every member of the family suddenly discovered an important reason to walk through the kitchen.
"Just checking..."
The lid lifted.
One Murukku disappeared.
The lid closed again.
Everyone walked away looking wonderfully innocent.
The snack tin quickly became the busiest place in the house.

Among its most loyal visitors were my younger brother and me.
Like many siblings, we couldn't have been more different.
He loved savory snacks.
I was hopelessly devoted to sweets.
At some point, without either of us planning it, we created our own little trading system.
He would happily offer me his Cadbury 5 Star chocolate.
I'd hand him a Murukku from the snack tin.
Neither of us ever felt like we were giving something up.
We both walked away absolutely convinced we'd gotten the better bargain.
Looking back now, I smile because it was never really about chocolate or Murukku.
It was our own childish way of saying,
"I know what makes you happy."
No contracts.
No negotiations.
Just two children delighting in each other's joy.
Those little exchanges lasted only a few seconds.
But somehow they became one of the memories that stayed with me
long after countless bigger moments faded.
When I think of Deepavali now, I don't remember how many Murukkus were made.
I remember two children sitting together, laughing over what they each believed
was the greatest trade in history.
Looking back now, I still can't decide who got the better deal.
